Create a Manga Scroll
11.30am - 12.30pm

First appearing hundreds of years ago in Japan, Manga scrolls were the very first comic strips the world had ever seen. They told stories and tales without the use of words, relying purely on the use of images and symbols to get messages across to the reader. You are invited to create your own Manga scroll with Andy Willard, a local cartoonist/illustrator who has worked on a variety of comics and comic books, many of which with schools and youth groups. Your scroll will feature characters that you have invented, getting up to whatever adventures you can dream up. The scroll itself  could end up being very big indeed, and can displayed in your school for all to see.

There'll be a brief warm-up exercise to begin the session, just to get you good and ready to get drawing, then the scroll creation will start. The word 'Manga' originally means 'rush' or 'done quickly', and your challenge will be how much you can get done in the session.
This lively workshop provides great opportunities for young people to explore techniques, use their imaginations, work together as teams or in small groups and invariably results in some impactive and highly original artwork.

Andy Willard is a professional illustrator and graphic designer and works with many outreach art projects including workshops for the Towner in Eastbourne.
